online petition for merchant marine seamen of WW II
|
| |
Mr. Yates, Can you help with this? I am trying to get congress to pass legislation that will provide recognition to some 10,000 seamen that have not been able to gain recognition or have already been denied their recognition as veterans because of actions taken by government agencies before Public Laws 95-202 and 105-368 were placed into law. The seamen are all in their 80's, and most need VA health benefits.your area for this as an item of interest? Otherwise,... more »

I seem to recall sailing with a Butch Kates in the long ago, dim
past :)
Also, I'd recently been thinking about Sun Oil because my company had

Logbook of Northenr Sun
|
| |
Mr. Kates Thanks to you and some other mariners, I have learned a great deal about my brother and his rescue after the sinking of the tug Menominee by the German U-boat 754 and subsequent rescue by the Northern Star. I am forever grateful. I have been able to talk with three members of the crew from the NS and particularly with one who participated in the actual rescue. I was able to get a death certificate from Dover DE that indicated that my brother lived about 7 hours after rescue and died aboard the NS. Can you help me get info from the actual logbook from the NS? There should be specific details regarding the rescue in there and possible some information as to what happened to the other four men that were on the lilferaft before the rescue. That is, if someone talked with the captain and the chief engineer from the tug..I have been in touch with family members of the tug captain but they only have limited info to share. No one seems to know who the chief engineer was so that avenue is left blank. I just feel like that logbook may share some light on areas that are vague. Can you guide me in the right direction? I would certainly appreciate it.... more »

Home on vacation from the deep blue and have added a few items and updates to the site. I have been seeing quite a few new names in the guestbook.
