Notice that there is now a 3D Man icon to click on. I just happen to have red/cyan glasses here, and it does work to a certain degree (mostly the traffic stands out).

sorry, we needed to get the names for building security and surprisingly, we've had 100 people sign up - it will be interesting to see how many actually show, though

I am signed up but, unfortunately I have to miss the event. There doesn't seem to be anyway to take my name off the list to free up my space for someone how can make it. Is there an event administer who can do that?

If I understand it right, you can show up, they just won't let you in!
I wonder if they have fire regulations, or something like that, to limit the number of people in some way.

our contact at the building already has the final list, and we apparently are lucky to have gotten the last 10 or so ppl in there, but thanks for the thought...

Colin pointed out at the meeting that this google maps 3D feature was probably an April fools joke (got me :-) because the 3D effect appears to be available for all street views, and the effect appeared to have been faked. Makes sense, but the "feature" is still in place... maybe google plans to use 3D photography in the future, and these will go from fake 3D to real as they are updated...

I still believe it to be a trick. The red is shifted more as you move away from the center of the image, and for a typical looking down a road view that would give a convincing effect. If it was a real stereoscopic fixed view pair, there would be parallax. If it was a true stereoscopic VR, the amount the red shifts would change as you turn your view.

That's not a filter though, that's precisely creating the analglyph that is needed. Imagine turning just the red lines to grayscale, and then make a filter that would work out what the blue lines should look like, it wouldn't quite work.
You could shape a flat scene to any depths if you apply the right rules, and that's what I think Google are doing, with rules that suit a road going off into the distance.
Or maybe it was done to work best with 3D Chrome?:

It is a trick and, depending on semantics, "faked". But it's real.
They used the architectural data they have available (basic information about buildings - you can see how that works when you move your move around, since it identifies walls and floor more or less correctly; I think it's the same data Google Earth uses for their citie's KML buildings), and projected the data they have available to that geometry, shifted the view a little bit, and used it to create the second channel. It's a brilliant idea and very well executed, but of course it's not perfect - if you have a truck on the street or a person walking on the sidewalk, for example, it maps those as if they were part of the background (floor/walls). Hence why you'll see some things popping up when you use colored 3d glasses to view it, like trees, people, and traffic lights.
That can't be done in Photoshop. Technically it can, but it's a 3d technique; it's not just shifting channels. If you look at the floor paintings on a long, empty street you'll see they're converging perfectly well; that's because it's perfectly mapped to the ground with no obstacles or obstructions of any kind.
Awesome stuff, really.

Have you read an article about it? I still doubt it to be any more than a trick, and based on what you've said, here are a couple of reasons: I don't think they have accurate KML data for everywhere. Also, taxis come out quite effectively, and it's unlikely there is KML data for every car in every photo they've taken.
