Florida Legislative Session: Criminalizing Addiction is Not a Solution
By Trudy Duffy | New Smyrna Beach
There are two bills in the current Florida
legislative session, which runs for 60 days starting Jan 10, 2012, which
address sentencing and treatment for non-violent offenders.

Criminalizing Addiction Doesn't Work
An estimated 26.5 percent of inmates admitted to prison during Fiscal
Year 2009-10 were convicted of a drug crime. Almost two thirds of
Florida inmates who enter prison for any crime also have a substance
abuse problem, and more than 80 percent of those who could benefit from
treatment are released without it due to funding constraints.
