The Republicans and Tea Partiers love to talk about patriotism, God and country. They are in fact, enthralled with these concepts.

 

So let’s talk about ‘patriotism.’

 

Real patriots do not abandon the majority of their people to the profit whims of special interests.

 

Real patriots do not want to destroy the social safety net that keeps people up, when free market failure has beaten them down.

 

Real patriots believe in corporate social responsibility.

 

Real patriots believe in the socially just promise of liberal government support for a livable wage; robust, collectively bargained labor conditions and labor law; environmental and conservation regulations and standards for our ecosphere, and universal healthcare for all.

 

Real patriots don’t want to destroy Social Security and don’t believe in allowing homelessness and poverty to continue to grow in America.

 

Real patriots want equality of opportunity for every man, woman and child; regardless of their ethnicity or sexual preference.

 

Real patriots believe in the freedom to marry whomever we wish.

 

Real patriots believe in a woman’s dominion over her own body, free from interference by the State.

 

Real patriots don’t fight wars of injustice for defense contractors and collective interests that invest in too heavily in them.

 

Real patriots believe in the diversity of religion in the private sphere. And the separation of religion from the governmental sphere.

 

Real patriots believe educating our children means teaching them about the plurality of all religions, and the right to not practice religion at all.

 

Real patriots are liberal and progressive, because America is born of liberation from tyranny in all forms, be it governmental, religious, moral, fascist, free market or any other tyranny that rears its ugly head.

 

Above all, we believe in the spirit of progress for all people and nations, and support the effort to actively cultivate better times for more people.

 

Let’s not make anymore mistakes in 2012.

 

Dennis Kucinich lost his primary race in Ohio, because not enough people and progressive groups helped him in that race, and his opposition had the full establishment in tow to eliminate his voice from the halls of Congress. That, and Dennis probably could stand to benefit from the realization that the Lone Ranger – gets nothing done. We have to band liberals and progressives together to work toward the horizon. Alan Grayson certainly helped him a lot, and I was glad to see that solidarity from my progressive neighbor.

 

Ilya Sheyman lost his primary race in Illinois, despite the fact that almost every progressive group and personality bet the house on this one candidate who, despite believing in progress and liberalism, perhaps will benefit from the realization that too many progressives, suffer from too many talking points, a lack of intellectual diversity and not enough understanding of the fact that we must support all liberal progressives wherever they are to win a threshold number of reps in the Congress. Nothing short of that will win progress for our people.

 

It takes a village, and that’s not a talking point.

 

Let’s face it – truly democratic politics is not about training camps and sure things. It’s most often, about liberal and progressive personalities, gut instinct and the willingness to support each other in doing the right thing for the people of America. FDR did not go to camp. MLK did not seek to earn a certificate in talking points. People like this are born, not ‘trained.’ We need unique leaders who don’t play games with the lives of Americans or suffer fools enthralled with Wall Street. We need leaders who will lift those up around them.

 

We can and will make progress. But first we need to elect people who understand what is at stake.
