I had the pleasure of
attending the 'Meet the Candidates 2012' forum sponsored by the
Chamber of Commerce and a consortium of central Florida businesses
this week.
Of course, our opponents were there as well. :-)
John Mica, Republican, addressed the crowd, intimating his deepest
'conservative' beliefs. Essentially, lauding his 20 year
incumbency and record. Curiously missing from his
self-congratulatory musings of conservative goodness, was his
record of excessive war-mongering, minimum wage suppression and 20
year corporate-financed war against the poor and the working
families of America.
Sandy Adams, Tea Party caucus member, also spoke to the crowd. She
shared the all too familiar Tea Party mantra of 'cutting the
spending.' But hers, truly is a Conservatism, Inc., no? Where is
the conservatism when it comes to war-spending? And why no mantra
regarding the importance of the conservation of natural resources
and biodiversity, clean air and water? Why instead the
conservation and cutting of help for the unemployed, poor and
working families of America? And why the excessive focus on banks
and corporate needs, instead of the needs of childhood education,
universal healthcare and the social safety net?
When I spoke to the crowd, I intimated what
we believe -
that government is not a tool for careerist profiteering, that
excessive war-spending is bankrupting America, that we should not
seek to pull the rug out from under unions, who are fighting for
higher wages and better working conditions. I told them that real
patriots don't slash and cut the social safety net at the precise
time that we are on the brink of a second Great Depression in real
economic terms for the poor and working families of America. I
told them I represent you and millions of other people that feel
the exact same way.
And you know what? They listened.
Many
of you have helped immensely with my campaign, and because of
that, we are going to win. But there is still a great deal more
to accomplish before we cross the finish line. For those that
can, will you contribute $250, or whatever you are comfortable
with, now?
