It’s unclear where conservatives of the right wing negativity
persuasion want to take America. But in the pit of our stomachs, we
know America has already been there, and we don’t want to go back.

A landscape of fear, religious control, puritanical unwisdom and
hysterical diatribes.

An economy of the wildest kind: robber barons, unbridled
profiteering, unregulated usurpation of public lands and resources;
unregulated working conditions, child labor, economic prejudice
and speculative bubbles, crashes and bail-outs.

A land of plenty – for the takers. For everyone else: predatory
lending, foreclosure, margin calls, subpar conservative education,
limited opportunity, wage slavery, servitude, incarceration.

Such a conservatism is bleak. In fact, it is deranged.

And yet, it envelops our land and media like a dark, coming storm.
Unperfect, austere and unwanted by the people of America. And yet,
it comes. In some parts of our country, it has arrived.

It has names. Like Mitt Romney (R-MA). Sarah Palin (R-AK). Marco
Rubio (R-FL). Allen West (R-FL).  It tells ‘liberals’ to “get the hell out
of the United States!”

It has an agenda and policies. Like the upward transfer of wealth,
less healthcare and less social safety net services, more poverty,
more concentration of power and a wider distribution of despair,
rather than opportunity.

We must respond. The American Left must act. It must act now.

It will not suffice to sell media progressivism for advertisement
dollars between takes. To see Democratic progressivism as a
business opportunity. No, that is circular and self-serving. The right
wing peddles fear and loathing – and the old American Left peddles
progressive slogans and legislative trinkets. We are awash in
solicitation by those that will do nothing, change nothing of the
political edifice that is rotten. Saturated by it.

We can defeat their morbidly conservative agenda. But it will take
solidarity among progressive Democrats and independents on a
scale unlike anything that has been attempted before. What the
people of America need and seek is a Congress and Presidency
guided by our progressive hands. The people need and seek a New
American Left that will advocate and legislate for a 21st century New
Deal America. Help me to transform the narrative. Help me to make it
happen.
