My son (12) is wanting to brush up his Japanese for our next trip
(whenever the hell that is). Is your school's Web program good for
youth? Do you know how it compares with other online programs/
software?

It isn't designed for children, but if he is fairly mature it should
be OK. More challenging than rosetta stone etc.

Thanks. I dug out some of my old books. Might try to find my old
Mangajin issues. But since he's a 21st century kid, online is what he
wants.

You could try to get all of the Managajin issues downloaded online in PDF. Does that count? ;-)

Mangajin was pretty cool early on but at one point it became more ads than articles. The "Best of" books were good if you can get a hold of those. I think I had to toss mine in a move.

He's already got me for that role.

My wife dug out some of our old games and things that she used when he
was younger; that's holding his interest for the moment. I'll probably
add an online course, combined with the various free resources out
there.

He never like manga or anime, and his motivation to learn (again; he
spoke until he was about 4) is the possibility of playing baseball in
Japan if he can't make the Major Leagues.... Yu Darvish is something
of a minor hero in his life.

We got to see him pitch at Orix stadium in Kobe a couple of years ago;
then the game got rained out and we got our money refunded, so it was
a win-win.

Not sure if Darvish is the best role model a kid could have, but being
half-Japanese, my son has latched onto the man's star, at least for
now.
