Honza ported the fix for the activation problems from 1.5 back to 1.4:

Reading the blog post there should be an option "clear activation
list".
On OS X I'm struggling to find it anywhere, is this just me having
fridge eyes or is the UI for the Mac release different?

In the options menu I have:
Always open in new window
Show preview tooltips
Shade Box model
Enable Accessibility Enhancements
Activate Same Origin URLs
Reset all Firebug Options

This is actually my mistake the "Clear Activation List" menu is
currently implemented in FireStarter extension and is not backported
in 1.4

Thanks Honza, I've only had 1.4.3b1 in for a few hours and its
noticeably happier - much appreciated
