Please report Firefox crashes to Mozilla providing precise steps what you do before it crashes. We can't fix Firefox bugs. But please backlink the report here, so we can follow it and maybe be able to provide a workaround.

To turn auto-updating of add-ons off you can do the following:

1. Go to the Add-ons Manager via Firefox button > Add-ons or Tools > Add-ons.
2. Click the gear button at the top and uncheck Update Add-ons Automatically.

I would like to note that I have seen other users posting about freeze issues here so I am sure it is related to the same source of problem.

Might be, but as long as you don't give clear steps to reproduce your problem we don't know and the problem can't be fixed.
Btw. the general steps to follow when having a problem in Firebug are described in our wiki.
