Firebug seems to be running quite slow on 3.5, especially with the
inspect function.

Also, is there any way to change the buttons on the top-left back to
text ones instead of icons?

No, the issue here is that the current visual design does not clearly
distinguish between buttons and tabs. So the simple way to prevent the
buttons from mixing with the panel tabs is to use icons. I'm not a big
fan of icons, but give yourself a little time and I bet you will find
they work well here.
