It suddenly stopped giving me the option from the tools menu (wouldn't
expand).
Icon greyed out as well.
This happened before and after i removed a MS plugin it worked ok.
This time it stopped in the middle of a session.
i have disabled all plugins and other addons and re-installed and re-
booted but still to no avail.

You need to try a new Firefox profile (and check your machine for
viruses). See http://getfirebug.com/wiki/index.php/FAQ.
