Hi there,
In the older releases of Firebug, it used to activate manually.
Now it activates "randomly" even with "activate same origins url"
unchecked !
How to get it to activate when I choose to ?
Thanx in advance

Which version are you using? Please use either Firebug 1.4.5 or
Firebug 1.5b4.

What do you mean by: it activates "randomly" ?
How can we reproduce that?

Btw. I have written some info about Firebug activation here
http://www.softwareishard.com/blog/firebug/how-to-enable-and-disable-firebug-15/

The FB may open (then activate) OR close on any web page, .

> How can we reproduce that?

By browsing any web page.
Am I the only one who experiences that ?

Not sure what your problem is, but take a look at this thread:
http://groups.google.com/group/firebug/browse_thread/thread/16ac8b44e171285a

Or, give us specific scenario, step by step description what you
doing.
Something like:
1) Load www.example.com
2) Open Firebug
3) etc.

Actually, this thread describes the same problem...

Here's a step by step :

1) Load 'http://3dcity' (A web site using flickr API. Yep, it's on my
PC...)
2) Activate FB
3) Redirect to flickr -> FB inactivates
4) Redirect to 'http://3dcity' with token -> FB is still inactive

Another :

1) Load 'www.lestempsdurables.com/home/'
2) Close FB
3) Load 'www.lestempsdurables.com/home/conception/architecture/' -> FB
activates

This happens randomly.

I'd really love FB to activate when I *choose* to open it, not
automatically...

Thanks for worrying about my problem.

So we cannot reproduce this case of course.

We use "Turn Firebug Off" because the minimize operation causes the
Firebug UI to close but it is still active.
Please see

I was not able to reproduce this case. Here is what I did:
1) open http://www.lestempsdurables.com/home
2) open Firebug with the status bar icon
3) reload the page
4) turn Firebug off with the [(|)] button far upper right on Firebug
UI
5) open http://www.lestempsdurables.com/home/conception/architecture/
Firebug was not open.

As I have explained before, this is not possible. Firebug needs to
know *before* the page opens that you want to use it. So it has to
have a list of URLs you want to debug.

You may have another extension or setting that is causing this
behavior. See

OK, actually I don't really care weather it's active or not (though it
causes slower page rendering, etc), the most annoying thing is the
auto-opening behavior.

So, is there any way to keep FB opened when I choose to, and closed
when I choose to ?

I may have too many extensions... But I've reset all options, I'll see
if that helps !

Yes or no depending on what you really mean by "opened" and "choose
to".

Firebug can be inactive and UI closed (gray bug, no UI)
active and UI open (orange bug, UI)
active and UI closed (orange bug, no UI)

When Firebug is active and UI closed we say it is "minimized".

If Firebug is minimized, then it will be minimized on all sites that
it is enabled for.

So if you enable Firebug on sites A and B but do not enable on C,
then:
When you select tab for C: Firebug is closed, gray.
When you select tab for B: Firebug is enabled. If you have it
unminimized, then UI.
When you select tab for A: Firebug is enabled. If you have it
unminimized, then UI.

You can "choose" to have the UI open or not, with the status bar icon.
One click switches between open and not open UI.

If you are having trouble, consider creating a new profile. It will
solve many mysterious issues.
