Yes, this is a known problem reported here:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=657292

I hope it'll be fixed soon!

Given that it has landed on mozilla-central, the Nightly build that shows up tomorrow should be fixed. It still needs approval/merging before the fix appears in Aurora (if anyone happens to be on the Aurora update channel)

I think you're too early. On my Mac, I usually find that the Nightly with the changes from yesterday is ready around 8am PDT.

I installed the update, but now whenever I refresh a page it switches
the focus to the Firebug window, which is really annoying. In previous
versions I could refresh and visit new pages without the Firebug
window stealing the focus. Is this the new intended behavior, or a
bug?

Or a problem on your machine? If you tell us exactly what steps to
perform, as if we could see your screen, perhaps we can tell. Or you
can install Firebug in a new Firefox profile to test if its your side.

Since Mozilla shifted its approach to versions to a fast-release
strategy, I personally think bleeding edge users should shift from
using Nightly builds to using Aurora. The Nightly builds are tested
without extensions. Our testbot runs Firebug tests against the Nightly
build. It crashes some of the time. Thus feedback from users, "it
crashes", is not very helpful and in fact takes a lot of people's
time. These crashes are fixed before Aurora. At the Aurora stage is
where feedback from users can have the most effect.

I am using Aurora 6a2... it updated automatically today from 5a2 to 6a2.  fb 1.8a3 crashes firefox everytime it is activated and has either Console, Script or Net panels activated.

- Aurora channel crashes for me too.
- Nightly channel works for me.

I just reinstalled 1.7.1 and it works fine for me on Aurora 6a2 (2011-05-29).  Not sure what the difference would be with the innards.
