Hi There,

We have a problem where a css file was overwritten by a test file on a
live site - bummer. Unfortunately this is one of those times where
human error has circumvented the backup systems we have in place and
the only copy of the original is on a laptop currently being fixed by
Apple (a real comedy of errors).

However, Firefox still has the original css file cached. we've tried
inspecting it in Firebug to copy it out but it's confusing trying to
extrapolate a complete css file.

My question is this: Can Firebug save the complete CSS file it's
inspecting from cache - or is there another way to do this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

The only way I know is to go to the CSS panel and select all, copy and
paste.

If it's cached by Firefox, then you ought to be able to find it in the Cache folder under the Firefox user profile.

In case you are not savvy to the Firefox profile internals (and in case you haven't already tried this), you'll generally find that folder somewhere under C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles on Vista, C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles on Windows XP, or /Users/[username]/Caches/Firefox/Profiles on Mac OS X. The files will not have a .css suffix, but you can order by date and drag the newest files (skipping the largest ones) into Notepad (or TextEdit) one by one until you find your CSS.

Hope that helps,

Load this on the location bar:
about:cache?device=disk

then search for the URL or name of the css.

It's safer to work on offline mode - to avoid losing the cache.

You click on the entry, then click on the link (while on offline mode).
Then Firefox will load the CSS file and you can save it with File -> Save...
