Can't right-click-inspect a float element

I'm trying to right click and "inspect element" on a floating element,
and instead end up inspecting the underlying document body. It's
possible the reason is that the z-index of the float is below the
body. However, I've been able to select the element I want to
inspect, so that may not be it.

Any advice on how I might "inspect element" in this case? Looking
ahead, it might be nice to have "inspect selection" for the case where
specifying the element by click is inadequate? Or perhaps a way to
cycle through the different stacked elements at a given coordinate?

Do you have a small test case, so this can be reproduced?

I am still having trouble loading firebug in Firefox. I would like to start out fresh. What files versions would you recommend for
Firefox and
Firebug? Can you send me links for these files...

Thanks

Unfortunately my "test case" was a bug that I fixed (the float
shouldn't have been there). I'll try to recreate the buggy version.
Meanwhile I did find a workaround. Although right-click-inspect
didn't work, the toolbar icon saying "click an element of the page to
inspect" did work---after clicking it I was able to click the float.
So the problem is no-longer critical.

Thanks for the feedback.

That's actually not part of this conversation, but the current recommended combination is Firefox 10.0 + Firebug 1.9.1.
