All,

Firebug 1.5 DOES NOT WORK on 64-bit Linux builds that are based on the
Debian compilation (meaning, most 64 bit Linux builds). The fix has
been committed to IceWeasel as part of Firefox 3.5.8/3.6, but it
hasn't been released yet on a stable branch.

Here is the relevant bug I opened last October. I found this issue
last September.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.5/+bug/449744

If you have any pertinent info, add it there. Otherwise go back to
Firebug 1.l4 and wait until the next security update is released.

Why on earth did you push Firebug 1.5 out through auto-update if you
knew this was a problem?

sir-brizz took a lot of time to work through the issue. He deserves
your thanks.

We pushed the auto-update after testing on supported Firefox
platforms. If you want to ask questions, ask Unbuntu why they ship an
unsupported version of Firefox.

Firebug supports the builds you download from Mozilla. Ubuntu can ship
that version or create their own fork. Firebug relies on users of
forked versions to report problems to the people that created them.
I'm surprised that after 36 alpha and beta releases of 1.5, that more
people didn't push on Ubuntu. It has been in their bug tracker as low
priority since last October.

Okay, it looks like I misunderstood, and you didn't know this was a
problem.

These things happen. Apologies for the flame.

And he has it. I really appreciate all of the work you guys put in
for free. I'll be sure to help the testing effort next time.

I don't test on Ubuntu at all. In the past I did test on Ubuntu, but I
never found any issues that differ from WinXP, so I stopped. In this
case, the out come would not be different, since the crash only occurs
on 64 bit.

Specifically I mean that Firefox would not hold up their release to
incorporate a fix for 64 bit builds. You read the Firefox team leads
comment yourself:

Yes, here you are absolutely correct. I do not support Firebug on 64
bit linux Firefox builds. My own reasons include not owning a 64 bit
machine. I certainly welcome input from Firebug users on 64 bit
machines, including the information that Firebug 1.5 still crashes
them.

I wish our mornings had not been disrupted. I hope you have enough
information about this issue now.

I made a mistake in closing 2553 too soon. It should have been open
until the bugzilla fix propagated to users. But I don't think that
would have changed the outcome here. We did not have any information
that linux 64 bit was anything other than a beta tester kind of thing.

FYI it has been fixed in Debian. You need iceweasel 3.5.6-1, xulrunner-1.9.1
1.9.1.6-1).
