Modified CSS rules don't affect page and disappear from Styles pane

Hi! First off a big thank you to Joe for this amazing piece of
software! I don't really want to bug you since you must be quite busy
right now.

So maybe somebody has some suggestions about this:

I'm running into some pretty weird behavior with Firebug on a
particular web site from one of my clients. When I select an element
in the HTML tree view and edit some rule in the style pane on the
right it's almost never actually applied. And as soon as I click
outside the Style pane (into the page for example), the rule I just
edited completely disappears from it.

Additionally, when I view the CSS source code in the CSS tab every
selector is prepended by the characters "*|" although they don't
exist in the actual source code (Is this a feature?). Changes there
are applied, though.

All that is completely reproducible on Mac OS X and Windows XP,
Firefox 2.0.0.1, Firebug 1.0 Beta 7.
