I have been running firebug for some time. I wanted to use it today
and see that is has disappeared. I have tried repeatedly to reinstall
the latest version (the one that comes up when you look for extensions) and it doesn't work. The only change that has happened recently is
an automatic update of firefox itself to the most recent version.
(3.0.10).  I did not notice at the time if that created this problem,
but have not added any other extensions. Prior to the update I also
installed personas, but have removed that to see if it made a
difference, and it did not.  Would like to know why it disappeared,
and why I can't reinstall in. I created a new profile and tried again. It
still would not install.

the problem turned out to be a recent update of AVG free anti-virus. I turned it off long enough to install and this time it worked.

I posted this 45 minutes ago, but don't see it on the forum. I have
added some additional info.

I disabled all of my Extensions and tried to reinstall and that did
the trick.

I had the same problem with FF3.0.10 and 3.5b4 using the lastest
alpha. I had the following Extensions enabled: Library Detector 1.0.2,
Operator 0.9.3, Personas for Firefox 1.0, Tab Sidebar 2.0.1,
TwitterBar 2.1.2 Ubiquity 0.1.8, Web Developer 1.1.6, and
Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 (which I didn't disable). I'm
not sure which Extension was interfering with the install or if it was
the system reboot I did (after a windows update), but firebug is now
working again (stable release).
