With no other extensions enabled (though with several installed),
Firebug 1.05 has just started causing FF 2.0.0.7 to crash on a regular
basis, usually within a few page loads of starting. Please let me
know how I should help debug this.

Thanks,

Barry

I'm seeing the same issue. I'd also be happy to help debug.

I was also seeing this. I upgraded to the beta version and things
seem to be going okay.

I'll let you know if I see anything different.

If I load www.dasauge.de Firefox crashed down with installed Firebug
(1.0.5).
If I deinstall or deactivate Firebug there is no error!
Other extensions (always the newest!!) Fasterfox, JS View, Customize
Google, FoxyProxy, ColorZIlla, HTML Validator, WebDeveloper, Firefox
Accessibility Extension, IE Tab, Search Status, SEOpen, DOmInspector
and Bookmarksynchronizer!

My FF 2.0.0.7 with Firebug 1.05 (also other extensions installed, but
disabled) crashes exactly when entering one of the following sites:

http://ling.pl/
http://javascripttoolbox.com/

I've also noticed one random crash when no particular activity were
performed. Is there any way I could help more?

Same problem here. If firebug 1.05 is active in FF 2.0.0.7, then FF
crashes in some sites (ex. www.distrowatch.com)
I have the same configuration (Firebug 1.05 + FF 2.0.0.7) on my laptop
without problems.

The problem appears to be Firebug + AdSense. This started happening to
me yesterday, and is consistent - and only on sites with AdSense.
Disabling Firebug stops the problem.

For those having trouble reproducing the problem, goto a page with
AdSense ads, and if it doesn't crash the first time refresh it. I
noticed it when working on www.AlCowlings.com for anyone needing a
page to test - it crashes firefox on refresh everytime if firebug is
enabled and the site only has one adsense ad on it.

As far as I know the biggest change in FF 2.0.0.7 is disabling
javascript being run via chrome:, for reference:

http://www.gnucitizen.org/blog/0day-quicktime-pwns-firefox and
http://www.mozilla.org/security/announce/2007/mfsa2007-28.html

In the second doc we have, "To protect Firefox users from this problem
we have now eliminated the ability to run arbitrary script from the
command-line."

Possible Firebug + AdSense triggers this type of code? Absolute shot
in the dark.

I hope someone can fix this soon, I need Firebug back!

John -

I have downloaded the new Firebug beta (1.1.0b2) from the URL you
specified, and this seems to take care of the problem. Now when I
visit the site (AlCowlings.com) I can refresh to my hearts content,
with no Firefox crash.

The console shows about 20 javascript warnings, but handles this quite
gracefully.

Thanks for getting back so quickly, I'm quite happy to be able to use
Firebug on my sites again.

Cheers!

Worth mentioning:

I tested the other sites posted in this thread, and all behave
normally with the new Firebug beta. All the sites also have AdSense
ads, so I'm pretty positive its Firebug 1.0.5 + Firefox 2.0.0.7 +
AdSense that triggers the crash.

I encounter the same crashes on sites with Adsense. Switching from
1.0.5 to 1.1.0b2 reduced the number of crashes considarably, but it
still happens on occasion.

The behaviour started only like 3 days ago after running smoothly for
weeks. So I'm still trying to figure out what has changed in my
configuration.
All I can say is that's is not a general problem of FF 2.0.0.7 +
Firebug 1.05 + Adsense since that combination is still working well on
my other PC.

Not sure if it's of any help, but here is a link to a Talkback
Incident report for one of the crashes:

Upon further browsing, I find the issue to still be present as well
even with the Firebug Beta.

The issue seems to present when I have 2+ tabs open where both pages
have AdSense ads.

For example, having both of these URLs open will crash firefox 2.0.0.7
for me every time:

http://www.topix.net/city/raleigh-nc
http://www.traffic.com/Raleigh-Durham-Traffic/Raleigh-Durham-Traffic-Reports.html?AWOPARTNER=TOPIX&PREVIEW=true

A good way to test is to go to the first one, and middle click the
traffic link to launch the second URL. It will start loading and then
hang Firefox, usually but not always showing the XP "serious error"
dialog.

I'm quite curious to know whats going on.

The observation about starting three days ago, and the flurry of other
reports in the recent time frame makes me wonder if by any chance
Adsense implemented something new that is triggering a bug. Also, of
course whatever it is may be used at other sites too which do not get
as much use and which could confuse the picture with occasional
reports that do not have Adsense involved.

George, it would be helpful if you can get the talkback trace for
these examples so we can compare them to the one Mattisse posted.

mattisse, that stack trace you posted is very helpful because it shows
the crash occurs in the JS engine's decompiler after an error. If we
can reproduce the problem with firebug 1.1, then set BreakOnAllErrors
we might be able to track down where the decompilation is called,
figure out what cases cause it to crash, and avoid decompilation in
those cases.

your adsense theory is a good one. i reverted back to FF 2.0.0.6 and
am still having the same problem with firebug enabled on sites with
adsense, so i think the problem is an update that adsense made, not
firefox or firebug.

I am not sure if this is the right place, or if it can help, but I
have been getting pretty regular crashes - I think with different
versions of Firebug. It is quite possible it is a problem in Firefox
only, but I don't know. I have had Firefox configured with Talkback,
so the crashes I have been seeing should be recorded somewhere, but I
have no idea where to look.

I just had one of those crashes. This was with Firefox 2.0.0.7 and
Firebug 1.1.0b2.

I now have Visual Studio set so it comes up and gives me an indication
after these crashes. This time I captured what it told me:

Unhandled exception at 0x00000000 in firefox.exe: 0xC0000005:
Access violation writing location 0x004b5f74.

It seems as if the crashes I see involve leaving (closing) a page but
then there is enough time after that before the crash that I have
usually forgotten the exact sequence when it happens. I am not really
sure, but I think the last site I had visited (other than possibly
Google search results or maybe Spamcop) was at

http://www.authorsden.com/visit/viewshortstory.asp?id=12359

I'll be happy to post a talkback trace, except I don't believe I have
it enabled in my Firefox install. Googling around on how to enable it
is proving fruitless, if someone could give me some simple
instructions on how to enable Talkback I'd appreciate it.

It may just be an availability heuristic (not to mention that most
pages have adsense) - but there seems to be a strong correlation with
firefox crashing on my XP Pro bx with google's syndicated ad service
address in the status bar.

To solve this we need talkback traces. Unfortunately you have to
reinstall Firefox to activate Talkback. You don't have to uninstall,
just re-install and select custom and then DOM Inspector and
Talkback.

After that when it crashes put "Firebug 1.1.0b2" (or what ever version
you have) in the Talkback comments. Then post here or open an issue.

It is a simple matter to generate crashes because they happen so
reliably. I just re-intsalled Firefox 2.0.0.7 and enabled the
"Quality Feedback agent." When it crashed, I put "Firebug" in the
description bug for to put "1.1.0b2". I can submit another crash
report if necessary.

I also saved the Talkback details as a text file which I can send you
if it is helpful.

Let me know what I should do.

Thanks,

Barry

Well I don't know which one you submitted. There are three crashes I
know something about:
Issue 291 -- Bug 370810 -- nsHTMLDocument::MatchAnchors fixed1.8.1.8
(I don't know what that means for Firefox)
Issue 293 -- Bug 395581 -- mPipeOut null in review for FF3, may not
affect FF2
The decompile bug (aka adsense) -- stack top is msvcrt.dll -- needs to
be filed with Mozilla.

Any of these sound like the one you have?

In Firefox 2.0.0.7 I get a consistent crash with

None of those sound like mine. I submitted the crash report with the

At some point I think I selected an option when Talkback came up, and
since then it has been sending its report without stopping to let me
enter comments. I have not been able to find a way to get it back to
stopping.

Any idea about that - particularly how to regain control? I can't
find a place to change its options when it does not stop.
