Removing extension and reinstalling usually doesn't help
since you are still using the same Firefox profile (which
seems to be broken in your case)

Try to create a new profile and install only Firebug into it.

Also it could be a collision with another extension, in such case
we would be interested which one it is.

Also note that inserting a multi-line script into the Command Line lets Firebug automatically switch to the Command Editor. See the description of the Command Line for more info.
But I guess you already know that.
