We used gdl files followed by gdef before in Firebird 1.5 years ago to
create new databases.

Can someone share what the equivalence is in Firebird 5.x please?

Only when database is not in use and connection is not specified via
server. It essentially uses embedded Firebird connection. Requires r/w
access to database file.

If you use the commandline that only you uses a database name, and no
protocol and/or host, then yes. Since Firebird 3.0, that uses the
embedded engine, and the embedded engine does not verify passwords at
all: your file system access rights to access the database are
considered sufficient authorization.
