Subject: Fire Island Minyan Mid-Winter Update

In the bizarre world of weather, snow fell on FI while we (or at least some
of us) were still there [late October], while the rest of the winter has
been both bereft of snow & quite mild.  Go figure!?!

Happy Friday-the-13th; for those with paraskevidekatriaphobia, Friday
was *not* your day!  This year is a bit of a rarity, with three instances
of that faux-ominous date.

Fire on Fire Island!  The past few months have seen two maelstroms on the
island, the first a large one in the Pines in November that took-out a
number of landmark buildings:

http://www.fireislandnews.info/home-mainmenu-1/1087-fire-island-pines...
and in true FI spirit, the rebuilding has begun!:

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/05/diller-scofidio-renfro-t...
. . . in other incendiary news, a fire recently took-out two houses in
Ocean Beach:
http://local.nixle.com/alert/4764943/
Unfortunately, #258 & #260 Wilmot are no more, just three from the beach,
But the skill of the many firemen limited the fire's destructive reach!

Mazal Tov to Barry & Suzanne Rozenberg upon the birth of a (second)
grandson  (Pinchas Eliyahu) to Josh & Alyse (nee Neumark).

Avi Ganz will be running the Jerusalem Marathon on March 16th for "Team
Darkaynu".  If you'd like to donate to this worthy cause & support Avi,
please check-out his webpage:

R. Shaul Magid had an article published in "Religion Dispatches" magazine:
http://www.religiondispatches.org/archive/atheologies/5548/the_hypocr...

Spotted at the Ramaz School Annual Dinner:  Alice Silverstein exercising
her vocal skills in the Choir, and Ben Houben (Ba'al Koreh of Summer '08,
now with Smicha & the Associate Rabbi at the Young Israel of Pelham
Parkway) helping-out with logistics.

Spotted in St. Thomas:  Michelle & Mona, taking a tour of the second-oldest
synagogue structure in the western hemisphere & wondering why our shul
doesn't have sand-on-the-floor (might our relationship with the town of
Seaview be analogized to that of the conversos with Spain?):

Unfortunately conditions are generally poor for skiing across the country
and vacations might not go as planned, but Fire Island is only ~four months
away . . .

Enjoy!
