Line of Duty Death - Bedford, NH

It is with deep regret that the we announce the Line of Duty Death of Lieutenant James Clark of the Bedford, NH Fire Department as the result of a post-shift medical emergency he suffered on April 11, 2013. Arrangements will be announced when they are complete. The Fire Instructors & Officers Association of New Hampshire sends it condolences to the Clark family, the Bedford Fire Department, and all those who knew Lieutenant Clark through his distinguished 26 year fire service career.

Roof Snow Loads

With yet another late winter storm of heavy snow predicted for our region this week please be aware of roof snow loads as you operate.

Attached is an article written by Lt. Bill Greenwood, Keene Fire, regarding roof snow loads appropriate for your bulletin board or kitchen table discussion. There is also an info sheet used by Concord Fire with instructions to assess and calculate a roof load if you are requested to check conditions for collapse potential. This simple sampling and assessment process was developed by Deputy Chief Sean Toomey, who is also a fire protection engineer.

Storm Relief Need - Surplus PPE

We have received several requests from/for departments in NY and NJ that were severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy and the nor'easter that followed it. There is a serious need for serviceable PPE that is less than 10 years old.

If your department has any surplus gear sitting in the back room please consider helping our neighbors in their time of dire need. We are directing donations to the Terry Farrell Fund (terryfund.org). They are grass roots, boots on the ground, and legit (confirmed by Chief Goldfeder).

Captain Proulx golf tournament fund raiser

Last November 4th we lost an active member, Captain Roland Proulx of the
Manchester Boston Regional Airport Fire Department. He battled mesothelioma
cancer for just over a year. We are hosting a fund raising golf tournament

We had a tremendous student response for the upcoming class "The Nozzle Forward: Interior Offensive Fire Attack" . We heard from a lot of people who were interested in attending after the class was full, and we were able to hire an additional instructor and arrange to fly him in from Seattle. Now that I got your attention... Thanks to Lt. Bill Greenwood from Keene Fire for passing along that Globe will be giving away 125 sets of turnout gear in celebration of their 125th anniversary.

Through this donation program, all-volunteer fire departments that serve a population of 25,000 or less and are in need of new gear can apply to receive up to 12 sets of Globe gear. Applications must be received by May 31, 2012, and awards will be announced monthly between July and December.

House Fire - Concord Deputy Chief

You may already be aware that one of our own suffered the tremendous loss of a Second Alarm fire in his home last night. Concord Deputy Chief Sean Toomey returned to his Warner home about 7:00 last night to find heavy smoke showing from his house. The Warner Fire Department and numerous mutual aid companies made an extremely aggressive interior attack under heavy fire conditions. According to Concord Chief Andrus, the companies made a tremendous stop, and although the second floor is heavily damaged the majority of the first floor possessions may be salvageable.

On behalf of the Bedford Fire Department, it is with deep regret that we announce the passing of retired Captain Donald Folsom. Captain Folsom passed away on March 14th. Captain Folsom served the Bedford Fire Department as a call-member from 1963 to 1983, continuing as an active member of the Bedford Firefighters Association after his retirement.
