Nick Faust has complained about the problem with the 3rd act in
Bertolucci's films. Bertolucci did not write the script for this film
but I have to agree that this film suffers for the lac of any
conclusion. It starts out great, beautifully filmed, interesting
coming of age story and an exciting mixture of sex and politics. Add
to this taboo and identity questions and you have a golden ticket. I
was on edge for the first 2/3 of the film, thinking that this was a
perfect film in every way, but then came the last act and nothing came
of anything. There was really no conclusion, and I'm not asking for a
happy ending or an ending at all, just an answer to the questions the
film asked and made me care for, like identity. What does the film
tell us about the twins, really? That they will never change? If that
is the point then why are they like this? Are the parents at fault?...

Anyway, I loved the references to all the films and especially the
inter cuts from the films. Brilliant idea!
