Bernardo Bertolucci - Novecento / 1900 (1976)

Well, I started my Bertolucci month with a five hour film called
Novecento aka 1900. This falls into the category of films I would call
flawed masterpieces. The cinematography is stunning. There are some
really amazing scenes here, some of the best I have ever seen but the
film does not carry its own weight and the style is too uneven. It
does not make a convincing whole and the end is a rather huge let
down. I did get the symbolism but it just felt forced.

But on another note, who knew that Gérard Depardieu was once handsome?

I did not like this much at all. One of the few acclaimed films that I
really disliked. I only gave it a 5/10. Donald Sutherland's
performance, the cinematography and the score were really the only
redeeming qualities. The story was all over the place and unrealistic.
Like everything was pushed to be hokey almost, the acting the
progression, etc. I just thought it was really bad.
