ritual theatre, entitled "Blessings from Our Ancestors", at IFGE's 14th
Annual Convention at the Crystal City Hilton Hotel in Arlington, VA.=20

A cast of 10 will perform this as a ceremonial offering directly after Riki

Sex-change minister sues for bias

Sex-change minister sues for bias
BY SIMON DE BRUXELLES

A TRANSSEXUAL former church minister has been given premission to sue for
sex discrimination after claiming that she was stopped from starting a new
career as a beautician.
=20
At the age of 58, the Rev Bill Parry shaved off his beard, changed his name
to Mrs Dian Parry and enrolled on a further education course to study
beauty therapy.
=20
But Mrs Parry was later expelled from the course after complaining that,
unlike the other trainee beauticians, she was not supplied with suitable
models to practise on.
=20
Mrs Parry, now 60, is demanding compensation for lost earnings after
failing to pass the practical side of the course at Swansea College in
South Wales.
=20
Mrs Parry, who was dressed in a cream jacket and skirt and brown neck
scarf, was referred to as "Mrs Parry" during the employment tribunal in
Cardiff yesterday, which ruled that she could bring her case against the
college, despite missing the deadline for making a claim by five days.

She said yesterday: "I'm delighted that my case will be heard in full and
in public. I feel I have been treated unfairly and discriminated against
because I am a transsexual. "I'm still hoping to qualify as a beautician
to help me live my life fully as a woman."

Until two years ago, Mr Parry was a non-Conformist minister in charge of
three churches near his home in Croes Erw, Port Talbot, South Wales. Then
one Sunday he told his stunned congregation that he would spend the rest of
his life as a woman. His wife, Anita, 59, stood by him and helped the
formerly hirsute clergyman, who has three children, to pick new clothes,
make-up and jewellery. After she was sacked by the church, Mrs Parry
enrolled at Swansea College, using her new name and telling the local
education authority that she was undergoing a sex change.

The college accepted her but had difficulty finding models prepared to work
with the transsexual student. Mrs Parry claims that she passed the theory
side of the course but her practical work could not be assessed because she
was not given models to work with.

Mrs Parry, who is due to undergo her final sex-change operation this year,
said after the hearing: "It was all part of a deliberate attempt to oust me
from the course. I was continually discriminated against because I am a
transsexual."=20

After an hour-long hearing, the chairwoman of the employment tribunal,
Rachel Davies, said: "We are satisfied there is a case to answer."

A full tribunal will be held later this year. The college denies sexual
discrimination and will prepare its defence for the case. A spokesman for
Swansea College said: "This case is not over yet and we will be contesting
Mrs Parry's claims."
