А как сейчас наиболее кошерно делать сабжи? Хочу написать небольшую корзину для
небольшого магазина.

насколько она небольшая?

мне тут понравился подход Mojolicious: берется перловый объект (один
или несколько) сериализуется, пакуется, base64-ется, затем
подписывается секретным ключем и кладется в куки пользователю.

что прикольно в таком подходе: для многих операций юзера на сайте
можно не делать запросы в БД на тему а авторизован ли он: если в
подписанной куке есть юзерID, то значит авторизован :)

но тут 4К ограничение такой сессии

... Цифровая техника вытесняет аналоговую: цифры лучше букв! (ц)

у приведенного мной примера ограничение на размер куков - 4Кб

соответственно если хранить id-шнкии покупок, скажем каждый id
размером по 6 цифр, то получится около 500-600 покупок может совершить
покупатель. а больше - переполнится
