Subject: the creation of Fidonet and gays

Thank you for your straight-forward question! Isn't it funny how a simple
question or basic research ends weeks or months of name-calling, bickering,
and gossip (but I guess gossip can be more fun :-)

Yes, I am gay, for the record. And no, there was no other author of
Fido/FidoNet than myself, though of course I talked to lots of people and
implemented many other peoples suggestions over the years -- both gay and
non-gay people -- I didn't generally ask :-)

Being gay, and my experiences with radical organizing (gay groups and
anarchist communities) most definitely influenced FidoNet's design. The
concept of Nets an Regions as utterly autonomous units DIRECTLY descends
from my experiences and discussions with people organizing unpopular social
and/or political undertakings -- as anyone in that position -- political,
social, whatever -- in any place or time can understand.

(I'll reiterate that Regions as they are used now are NOTHING like the
original design -- they were meant to be identical to Nets, assuming the
American telephone system, where a region would be organized like a Net
except that there was no incoming mail host, eg. mail for xxx/99 wasn't
antumatically routed to xxx/0 if xxx was a REGION in the nodelist. That was
the only difference.

I hope this clears up matters. Thanks again for writing!
