The Department of Epidemiology at Emory University is accepting
applications for Pre-doctoral Trainees in the Reproductive, Perinatal,
and Pediatric Epidemiology training program, funded by a National
Institutes of Health T32 training grant. Trainees will be provided a
full tuition scholarship plus a stipend.
Our aim is to prepare independent researchers and teachers committed
to improving the lives of women and children through world-class
epidemiologic research.
Students in this program develop strong methodologic skills from a
rigorous core of biostatistics and epidemiologic methods courses.
They receive formal training in teaching skills and in the ethical
conduct of research. They gain academic understanding of the related
areas of reproductive, perinatal, and pediatric epidemiology through
coursework and inter-disciplinary seminars. The seminars, which
rotate in the clinical departments of Genetics, Pediatrics and
Obstetrics/Gynecology, and the Federal Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, expose students to faculty in reproductive, perinatal and
pediatric fields who may serve as their research mentors as they
specialize in one of the three research areas. Through this
coordinated and inter-disciplinary academic experience, students
become prepared to assume junior faculty positions or postdoctoral
fellowships as they move toward independent research careers.
Current trainees conduct research in a wide variety of areas including
stress and preterm delivery among Rio residents, environmental
exposures and pubertal development in girls, stress and bacterial
vaginosis during pregnancy, and cognitive impairment associated with
in-utero smoke exposure. Recent graduate, Dr. Michael Kramer, won the
Best Student Poster Award at the 2009 American College of Epidemiology
Meeting for research he conducted while a trainee.
Competitive candidates will have strong analytical and writing skills
and be interested in working in the areas of reproductive, perinatal,
and pediatric epidemiology. Interested individuals are invited to
apply for the incoming Fall 2010 class for the Epidemiology PhD
program at Emory University through the on-line application available
at
http://www.gs.emory.edu/admissions/application.php. Applications
are due by December 1, 2009.
