Hello, everyone.

I've been encountering a regular problem when using Felix with Word
2007, and I was wondering if anyone here had encountered the same--and
maybe found a way to eliminate the problem.

When translating the first line of a paragraph, I notice that Word often
seems to arbitrarily change the setting for the Hanging Indent marker
(the bottom one of those two indent markers on the ruler), at which
point it no longer responds to input from the Space key, which has the
effect of causing words to run together in the second line.

Because that might be a little bit hard to visualize, I'll use this
paragraph above as an example below to show what I mean (as best I can
using e-mail, that is). The resulting sentence in Word ends up looking
something like this:

---

This seems to happen both with documents received from clients and with
blank documents into which I've copied text from elsewhere (such as from
a Web page or an e-mail message). As far as I can tell, it only happens
when overwriting or inserting text on the first line of a paragraph that
has more than one line in it, which is not an uncommon thing to do when
translating with Felix.

I can fix the problem by manually resetting the indent markers to what
they should be (which is usually how they were set in the first place),
but that gets kind of tedious in a long document.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Have you found a way to
prevent it from happening?

If anyone has any suggestions, I would be glad to hear them.

Best regards,

Sako Eaton

I've actually never used Word 2007 with the ruler showing -- Word 2007 takes up enough vertical space as it is -- so I hadn't ever tested this. I've been playing around with the ruler setting, but the bug doesn't seem to appear with my Word settings.

Does this happen at the end of the line? You're at the end of the line, and type a space and the next word, but only the word is typed? I have run into this error before, but in Word 2003. I can't remember if it was confined to the first line of the paragraph. I remember at the time finding out that it was related to some document format setting, but for the life of me I can't remember what it was. Maybe something to do with spacing and Asian characters.

Could you try the following? Open a document where this error didn't happen, delete all the text, and save it as test.doc. Next, do a "select all" on your document where this error happens, then do Shift-Left to select the entire document except for the last paragraph marker. Copy this, and paste it into the test document. Do you still get this error?

Ryan

Thanks for the response, Ryan!

If it were something I could prevent simply by hiding the ruler, I would
be very glad to do so, but unfortunately it seems to happen whether the
ruler is visible or not.

Yes, that's correct.

In fact, when it happened to me again just now, I was in the middle of
typing "...is not listed in" when I got to the end of the line, which
then appeared as "...is notlistedin," with the "is" remaining on the
first line and "notlistedin" spilling over into the second line (and
being somewhat indented, which was what tipped me off to the connection
to the Hanging Indent marker in the first place).

Yes, in my online searching for a solution, I've seen references to this
as a bug that has been carried over from previous versions of Word, but
I have yet to find a solution to it.

Maybe Microsoft will fix it in Word 2010? <g>

Yes, it still seems to occur even if the last paragraph marker is not
copied over to the test document.

Best regards,

Sako
