I've released version 1.7 of Felix.

Download the latest version here:
http://felix-cat.com/download/

This release includes a new glossary placement feature. The glossary
placement feature automatically replaces glossary matches in your
translation queries.

See the What's New section of the manual for details about this and other
recent releases.

I just downloaded and installed 1.7. Felix launches and I can change settings, etc., but the Word connection seems completely broken. I cannot open segments from keyboard shortcuts, the menu in Add-ins or the icons in Add-ins in Word 2007.
The menu and icons show in Add-ins, but nothing works.

Any ideas?

Did you open a Word file from an email attachment, or otherwise get the "Click to Edit" banner in a document? If so, restarting Word should solve it.

Otherwise, if you launch Word, quit, and then use the Show Logs utility (Start >>> Programs >> Assistant Suite >> Felix >> Show Logs), is there anything for Word Assist?

Further to this problem, I tried to uninstall Felix. The uninstaller froze right after launch and had to be shut down by the Task Manager.
I then tried uninstalling with Revo Uninstaller and eventually was successful. I installed 1.6.9.3, which worked just fine previously. However, the problem worsened. Now there is no Add-in menu and of course Felix does not connect with Word.
Once again, I uninstalled (Felix installer failed again, so I used Revo Uninstaller). I then installed 1.7 again.
No Add-in menu. Checked COM add-ins. Felix was there but unchecked. Tried checking but Word would no allow it even though my user is an administrator. Ran Word as administrator. I was able to check the box by the Felix add-in, but when I clicked OK, nothing changed. Went back and looked and the Felix add-in remained unchecked. Check will not stick. Therefore, Felix cannot connect with Word.

At this point I have run out of options that I know of. I hope there is some solution since I have a big project I need Felix for.

System: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, Office 2007 professional, Hardware: Core2Quat Q6700 2.66 GHz, 6 GM RAM

Charles, are any of the other Office interfaces working correctly?

Were there any errors when you installed either version?

Sorry, one more thing to check.

Could you open "regedit," (you can type it in the Start menu textbox), select the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" node, and search for "WordAssist" under Word>>Addins?

What is the LoadBehavior value set to? A value of 3 means load on startup; any other value means that Word is preventing it from loading.

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

1. PowerPoint and Excel both seem to be working.
2. There were no errors in the installation at any time.
3. Word file was opened from a normal folder.
4. In the log file, there is no tab for Word Assist, only Word History,
which is blank.
5. There is no entry for WordAssist under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -- Software -- Microsoft -- Office -- Word -- Adins

The only thing I found in a search was under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -- Software --Classes -- Type Lib

I searched both manually and using the Find in RegEdit.

It would appear, then, that the Word Add-in is not installed at all.

Please try the following.

1. Use Task Manager to ensure that no instances of Word are running (or just restart the computer)
2. Install Felix.
3. Make sure that the entry is there under Word--Addins. Do a global search to be sure, because in Windows 7 there might be multiple entries for Word.

Now, if you run Word and get the original problem (the Felix add-in is disabled and the checkbox cannot be checked), try removing the component and then adding it again manually.

One other thing to check for is anti-virus. Some anti-virus programs will silently disable COM add-ins that match its signatures (which have a fairly high false-positive rate). The solution there is to update your AV software, and disable it while installing.

If this does not fix it, one quick hack to get back to work is to create another account with Admin privileges, and use Word/Felix from there.

The issue appears to be that Office can get into a weird state where it marks a COM add-in as "unsafe" for some reason, and there is no published way to mark it as safe again. Microsoft has offered a few work-arounds, but they don't always work in all situations. But the security setting appears to be account-specific, so changing accounts sometimes gets around it.

Where do I find the add-in after deleting it?

Incidentally, there were no changes to the registry. I find no
WordAssist entry only the library entry as noted before even with a
global search of the registry.
However, the uncheckable Add-in appeared in Word. I deleted it but
cannot find it to add back in.

Never mind. I found it in the Felix program directory. I added it back
in and Felix now works in Word.

It also stuck when I restarted Word.

Thanks for all the help.

One last note. Now that the word COM addin is there, I find a number of
WordAssist entries in the registry. I wonder if the one from the
previous version just didn't get taken out.

Anyway, thanks again.

I'm glad you've got Felix working again. I know it can be frustrating when you've got a big job, and your tools aren't working.

I think that this is new in Windows 7 64-bit, but 64-bit Windows creates an alternate node in the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node). This is a view of the registry for 32-bit programs running in the 64-bit version of the OS. So when a 32-bit program registers itself to the same place as always, it will actually appear in this node.

The registry script for the Word add-in itself has not changed since 2009 at least, so I don't think that upgrading Felix in and of itself would cause it to go into different locations in the registry.
