I was asked on the JAT list if Felix would handle Open Office file
formats. Since TagAssist handles XML, it is theoretically possible, but
I wonder is there is any experience or knowledge about this.

Also, the same query asked about running Felix under Wine. Possible?

Thanks.

There is a very basic extension for OpenOffice Writer that will let you use
Felix. So far, I've only announced it in a blog post:

http://felix-cat.com/blog/2008/12/07/felix-extension-for-openoffice-writer/

That's where support for OO stands now. You could theoretically edit the XML
from OpenOffice formats in TagAssist, but it would be quite a chore and
prone to break the document.

I'm planning to eventually improve this extension, and add extensions for
the Calc and Impress programs. I'm also planning on releasing an XLIFF
translation editor, and XLIFF (an XML format) could serve as a bridge to
translating OpenOffice files.

I haven't tested it, but it's possible that it will work under Wine.

I have a laptop with Ubuntu 9.04. I won't get a chance for a week or so
(school holidays here), but I'll try running Felix in OpenOffice under
Wine and report back here about how it goes.
Nearly all my jobs are simple MS Word docs with very little formatting,
so the possibility of using Felix in a Linux environment is very
appealing to me.

A very late response, but here is what I found.

First, on an old computer running Ubuntu 8.10 and OpenOffice 2.
- Felix extension installed without problem in OpenOffice, but
- Wine gave a "runtime error" when I tried to run Felix.

Then, on a new-ish laptop with Ubuntu 9.04 and OpenOffice 3.
- Felix extension didn't install, the error message from OpenOffice said
something very similar to "does not work on this computer".
- Wine again gave a runtime error when I tried to run Felix. A gif
screenshot of the error is attached (is that allowed on this list? Will
see...)

I haven't had much success with anything on Wine, but I'm far from an
expert user and have never spent much time with it. But it seems fair to
say that at the moment, Wine will not run Felix easily if at all.

Thanks for the report. So it looks like you couldn't install Felix at all. The error is from a failure to import the visual theme of the installer, so it's possible that the process would at least get further without that theme.

As I said, I've never tested Felix on Wine, so I don't have any confidence that it would work. If it would be possible to make it work without too many modifications, however, I'd be willing to give it a try.
