is it possible for a 'total subscribers' stat?

hey guys,
i set up my feedburner account last week, and have really enjoyed using the service so far...good job! http://feeds.feedburner.com/thepopcast
that said, i've been having some difficulties in understanding the subscribers stats, so i had a look thru the forums, and this post was very helpful in understanding how they work - http://forums.feedburner.com/viewtopic.php?t=4008 - well worth a look if you're having difficulties with them too....
i was wondering whether it would be possible for feedburner to develop a clearer stat for the total number of subscribers?; rather than just recent stats, or averages, something which gives an overall view; at the moment, the stats can only update when a subscriber's podcatcher is open, and obv not every subscriber will be online at the same time - so perhaps a using a ping or similar once every 24hrs, feedburner could check the total # of existing subscribers with each podcatching service to give a guesstimate?
the problem with just relying on the 'high waterline' on the stats is that if someone unsubscribes, how would i realise that?
is this possible, or just much easier said than done?

I think I understand what you're asking, but I'm not sure that the data is there to support it. FeedBurner can only track your subscribers based on the ones that choose to download the feed (or a podcast episode). If they don't download, then we have no idea if they are out there.
So, the best that we can offer is the number of subscribers in any given day. And the 'Live Subscribers' page has real-time data in it, but it can only count the hits that it has yet received in the last 24 hours.

sure, thanks - it's just a shame that theres no way to get a better idea of the total # of peeps subscribing to the feed....
if one day reports 13 subscribers, and the following day reports 4; does this mean that 13 new subscribers were on one day, and 4 more the next, giving a total of 17s/scribers; or does it mean that there could be up to 13 subscribers, but only 4 of them ran their podcatchers on the second day, therefore feedburner only recieved 4 pings on said day?

It has nothing to do with pings, it just means that 13 people requested your feed one day, and 4 requested it the next. We have no way of knowing whether those folks just didn't open their applications that day, or if they acutally unsubscribed, and will never come back. The longer you have your feed running, the more you'll get a feel for how many subscribers you have. As an example, every weekend, pretty much EVERY feed loses subscribers. Thats just because fewer people open their feed readers/podcatchers on the weekends.
The stats that we record are actually the most accurate numbers for tracking your subscribers. Anything else would be an average, or a guess. Our numbers are based on the number of requests that we actually receive, and therefor they are accurate.
