Wow, Stuart, that's a great blog. I was suprised to see my humble little blog listed on your site. Now I know what Steve feels like -- I thought I was the only one reading it, and I  wrote it!

I wish I was an experienced enough runner to be able to answer your question, but since I'm not, I'm going to be bold enough to share some advice along the lines of something I think I heard on Phedip a while back. It's been helpful to me as I returned to the road this year. Set two goals -- a realistic goal and an idealistic goal. Shoot for the idealistic goal, but keep evaluating as you go along. The key is that the realistic goal should not be "well, if I can't do that, then I should just finish," -- it needs to be a similarly satifying goal (unless you're like me, in which case just finishing IS a satisfying goal!)  To my untrained eye, you seemed poised and ready.

Having run my first marathon with the dream goal of under 5 and the realistic goal of finishing, I'd like to finish marathon #2 in under 4:30 (my chip time was 4:42:58.) I know I can do it because last year I had to stop for a bathroom and a blister. This year -- thinner socks and carrying my own TP! However, my dream goal is to finish under 4:30 clock time, which would also be about a half-hour reduction.

Best of luck, and I hope you continue to keep us posted!
cheers,
Marci
