Hello,

I've released new version 0.7.3c. This release contains:

packages for new platform -- OpenZaurus/GPE;
fix for "full screen button bug" (I've added delay between accepted
button pressings, you can set time for this delay in Options
Dialog->General);
crash on closing application is fixed for Nokia 770.

Short list of my plans for future version is available at
http://only.mawhrin.net/fbreader/plans.html .

Oops. Release contains fix for this crash, of course. ;)

Feature request:
* full rotation, that is, not only switching between two orientations
* save last orientation
* read out loud using dbus-flite? :)

thanks,
Kasper

Do you mean "rotate key should shuffle through all directions" or a
preferences entry for setting the preferred orientation?

Not shuffle, but step, 0, 90, 180, 270 degrees. And it could be an
option in the preferences.
I like to change the position after reading a while. Usually 90 or 270
degrees. And I don´t like to go back to preferences

Nikolay, thank you very much for this great program! I've been using it
with my nokia 770 since the first day.

New version is working fine.

Looks promising.

I have some mobipocket books here. It would be great to use them
without conversion.

Hi Kasper,

FBReader supports "full rotation" since Version 0.7.2 (February 16,
2006):

"Added screen rotation by 90, 180 and 270 degrees. (All versions except
of Qtopia.)"

I know, but I want to be able to switch from 0 to 90 to 180 to 270 to
0 while reading, without going into the preferences.

Okay, now I've got it.

How do we handle the navigation while rotating?

I know currently the zoom key [+ -] does page flipping for full pages.
This works the same regardless of rotation, but might be awkward to hold
in some orientations, depending if you are left or right handed etc..

I think it might be a good idea to also have the same functionality on
the "rocker" key (the directional keypad) so that "up" and "down" (from
the text's point of view) always flip pages?

I think the TODO also has ideas about tapping the screen bottom to go
forward one page, and tapping on the top goes back one page. I think
this is a good idea as well

You can customize FBReader for such functionality. Just open Options
Dialog, go to 'Keys' tab, click button on this tab, then press hardware
key you want to customize -- and select your preferred action for this
key.

Yes, this idea is included in our TODO.

Ah, but we want the mappings to change depending on the rotation.

No rotation (I find this position most convenient when I'm holding my
Nokia 770 in my left hand):

zoom- zoom+
.---------===-===---------------------------------.
| up .----------------------------------. |
| left right | book text | |
| down | book text | |
| | book text | |
| | book text | |
| | book text | |
| `----------------------------------' |
`-------------------------------------------------'

Hardware buttons should act like this:
up = previous page
down = next page
left/right = history prev/next, or whatever it is that those buttons do
zoom- = previous page
zoom+ = next page

90 degree rotation (I find this position most convenient when I'm holding my
Nokia 770 in my right hand):
.------------------.
| left |
| down up |
| right ||zoom-
|.----------------.|
||book text |||zoom+
||book text ||
||book text ||
||book text ||
||book text ||
||book text ||
||book text ||
||book text ||
||book text ||
||book text ||
||book text ||
||book text ||
|`----------------'|
`------------------'

Hardware buttons should act like this:
left = previous page
right = next page
down/up = history prev/next
zoom- = previous page
zoom+ = next page

For other orientations it would be natural to rotate the button meanings
correspondingly.

I was thinking the same. I'm glad Marius managed to explain it properly :)

Also, I finally pinned down a small bug today: For textfiles (.txt)
the last line of a paragraph is always shown on it's own. So for
example, at the end of a paragraph you first get a couple of lines,
end you expect to get to the next paragraph when you scroll again. But
before the next paragraph you first get a screen with just a single
line.

ciao,
Kasper

Yeah, exactly. Very good illustration :)

The reason I wish to have this kind of functionality is that things
could work a lot better without configuration. The configuration options
would of course be there if the user wants something very specific, but
for most of the cases, I think the explained functionality would Just
Work for most people.
