The "~" is shorthand for your home directory, which might actually be /
home/username.
On most Linux systems a removable drive will be mounted under /media,
e.g. /media/disk1 or /media/mmc or whatever.
Some graphical file managers show you the current directory path as a
sequence of icons with names on them (so you can click to change the
directory). The actual path is the same names separated by "/"s.
Inside FBReader, you can use the "Add Book" icon to invoke the built
in file manager app. The current directory (with all the /'s
included) is shown at the top, and the first entry is always a
directory called ".." which takes you one level down towards the root
of the filesystem. If you keep going down you get the the "root",
which has the filename /, and you can then see a list if directories
to go back up a different subdirectorey tree. You will probably want
the /media directory. Keep selecting directories until you get to
where you want to go. The good thing is that FBReader will remember
where you are, so there will be no need to do all that directory
traversing again. You can also then manually add this directory to
your ebook path if you want.
