Modify the query used in the search field for an account

Dear all,

I saw that custom queries are planned for a future version but for the
moment I need to customize the query used by the account search field.

I populate my CRM db from an existing db and in this db I use a login
field as a unique ID for the user. This login field is reported in the
CRM as a comment (I didn't find any other way to do this).
I need to look into the contacts by login in addition to looking into
by the first name or last name.

please tell me how could I achieve that ? By custom the query in the
code or by developping a specific plugin ?

We have a branch called ransack that provides advanced search
functionality we are currently improving the UI but it should be
functional if you are willing to test it out.
