    Subject: Crew leader training

    Greetings,
There will be a CCCMB crew leader workshop on Saturday, January 4th 2014
at 9:00 am. We will be meeting in the Costco parking lot, next to the
Costco gas station. We will be walking to the site, hiking boots, long
pants and temperature appropriate layered clothing are recommended. You
should also bring water and snacks as needed. This workshop will focus on
tool and work safety, trail design, tread construction and engaging
volunteers. We will be conducting the training in the San Luis Obispo City
Froom Ranch Open Space. This hands-on training session will last
approximately five hours and include a lunch provided by CCCMB. This
workshop is one step in the process of becoming a CCCMB trail work crew
    leader.

There will be an opportunity to be mentored (the next step to becoming a
crew leader) at the CCCMB/ FASTA workday at the Stenner Open space on
    Saturday, January 11th 20014.

Space in the workshop is limited, so if you are planning to attend this
workshop, please confirm by e-mailing John Cutter by no later than
    Thursday, January 2nd 2014.

The complete process of becoming a CCCMB Trail Crew leader is as follows:

*Description of CCCMB Trail Crew Leader program (02/19/2011) *
Being a CCCMB crew leader involves a willingness to learn the fundamentals
of trail maintenance. Once you are comfortable with these principles, then
you can help by directing a crew of volunteers during a trail workday. It
is our hope that crew leaders will be able to lead a crew two or more trail
    workdays per season.

The largest time commitment will be the upfront time needed to learn the
fundamentals of moving dirt and guiding volunteers. Our crew leader
training program consists of 1) volunteers participating in a minimum of
three training opportunities and 2) serving as an assistant crew leader for
a minimum of three work days with different veteran crew leaders. Examples
of training opportunities include one-on-one mentoring, pre-trail workday
scouting rides, or a structured course.
