Come out and ride the classic RBC Chimney Bluffs ride this Saturday. A post ride picnic seems like a good idea. I will provide the hot dogs, condiments and grilling tools. Kindly email the number attending to ensure an ample supply of food. Bringing a dish to pass would be helpful as well. Looks like a great day to ride. RSVP to wsch...@rochester.rr.com.

Oh yeah! This is an awesome route and it will be a perfect day for a picnic. This was my very first 50 mile ride a few years back, thanks to the encouragement of Mark F. I never thought I could ride that far. Sometimes that's all you need is a patient person cajoling you along.

It's a long drive to the ride start, no doubt, but if you haven't ridden this route yet I guarantee you will find it's really worth the time in your car. The scenery is great - the bluffs are gorgeous - and there is a set of four killer hills that can be easily circumvented should one choose to do so. Bring your bathing suit in case you want to take a dip in the lake afterwards.

Consider bringing your s.o. who doesn't ride and she/he can hike and enjoy the State Park while you are on your bike.

I'm bringing food Wayne.

I'll see you there!

Further advice and encouragement for Chimney Bluffs: After the ride, stop at the winery that's a mile from the start and pick up a couple of cases of Fialka.

I'll have adult beverages in the cooler for post-ride.

Lake Ontario should be "refreshing" this year. More like a polar plunge, which will be a lot more compelling in June than the January options.

From the National Weather Service:

The Lake Ontario water temperature is taken at the Monroe county water treatment plant near Greece, N.Y. The temperatures is measured at the intake pipes about 1500 feet offshore at a approximate depth of 35 feet. The Lake Ontario temperature occasionally may not be representative of the surface temperature due to upwelling. This process, more common during the summer months, brings colder water from the deeper parts of the lake toward the surface near the temperature sensor. The surface water may be significantly warmer.

Lake Ontario temperature updated : June 14, 2013 = 45 degrees F

Thanks Cindy, I remember that day!  This ride was only a 25 miler and so long ago I extended it to a nice 50 miler since we do drive so far.
