Pittsford, N.Y. – In a moment, life can take an unexpected turn.
It was 4 years ago, on a sharp curve overlooking the calm waters of Canandaigua Lake, Dr. Brad Berk, CEO of University of Rochester Medical Center and avid cyclist, flipped over his handle bars and broke his neck.
“You can’t imagine what it’s like … the only way to communicate in the beginning is blinking your eyes and pointing to an alphabet board … you can’t move anything and don’t know what’s going to happen,” Dr. Berk said.
Dr. Berk toiled through physical therapy.
Less than a year after the accident, he returned to the hospital, not has a patient, but as the boss.
Getting back to the hospital was one goal; getting back on the road was another.
Thanks to a special tricycle, special friends and a special kind of grit, Dr. Berk is now back on the bike.
“I can move my legs fine, I’ve been strengthening them a lot over the last couple of years,” he said. “My problem is I don’t have any sensation.”
In its place is determination.
“You have to say you’ll never give up, so that’s what I’ve been doing,” he said.
Helping him heal is Barbara Anderson, Dr. Berk’s aide.
“He’s given me back what I’ve given him,” Anderson said. “He’s an inspiration for everyone.”
Sunday, cycling alongside the Erie Canal, Dr. Berk covered 9 miles.
“Feels great, get into that rider’s high, you get moving, feels good,” Dr. Berk said.
Dr. Berk is moving forward, unwilling to let that unexpected turn throw him off course.
15 miles is the goal when he rides in the Tour de Cure next month.
