Scanned tune books, etc. available at IMSLP Petrucci Music Library

Fynn Titford-Mock and others have been very active recently in submitting scanned tune books and other resources to the IMSLP Petrucci Music Library:

For example, click on Composers under Browse scores in the menu on the list and look for William Walker.
Here's a link to Fynn's page where he lists some of his submissions (there are others):... more »

Two of the guest editors should be well-known to members of this list. Nick: Is the University of Alabama reference an error or has something changed?... more »

Samuel Francis Smith & "Can I Leave You"
|
| |
Hi All,
I'm seeking information on where the 385b Can I Leave You text was published before it appeared in Southern Harmony. Sacred Harp id's the source of the words as Samuel F. Smith, 1832. I didn't find anything on Smith in The Makers of the Sacred Harp.
Thanks so much.

Written accidentals in the 1844, 1850 and 1859 editions [long]
|
| |
Given some recent threads, I thought it would be interesting to look at written accidentals in the first three editions of the Sacred Harp. Here's what I found:
1. 1844 1st Edition - 9 songs with written accidentals; majority of written accidentals function as leading tones in minor
AYLESBURY (28T) [minor, 4 pts., in John Chetham, A Book of Psalmody, 1717]... more »

Poland (was Raised sixths... again)
|
| |
Interesting; thanks a lot for the Select Harmony page! So it appears that
the Sacred Harp uses a sharped version of Swan's original ending. I
suppose one could argue that the ending he printed later in his own book
might be more authoritative, but using the first version also makes sense.
The insertion of the sharp remains a mystery, though.... more »

Raised sixths... again
|
| |
OK, it's not a subject I'm willingly resurrecting here - I always
think of Judy Caudle's brilliant response to a question about raised
sixths: "why don't you ask someone who really cares?"
But seriously, there are surely minor key songs that DON'T lend
themselves easily to a raised sixth (In the same way that it's... more »

Singings or singers in Nevada?
|
| |
Hi everyone,
One of my Seattle Sacred Harp buddies is traveling to Nevada soon, and is
wondering if there are any singers in the area to connect with. I can't
find anything listed at fasola.org. I don't know what part of the state
she will be in.
Thanks for any leads,
Clarissa
