For information to the Sacred Harp singers who knew
her:
Pauline Pate was not a regular Sacred Harp singer, but
was a relative, friend and acquaintance to many of us
who are -- not only in East Texas, but around the
South. Mrs. Pate was best known for teaching, writing,
singing, and playing (seven-shape) gospel music. She
was a friend of our family for as long as I can
remember. I attended two of her singing schools, and
found her to be strict, but fair; demanding, yet
forgiving; proper, yet warm underneath it all. She was
one of those unique individuals from "The Greatest
Generation". I suppose I learned from her more of the
details of what little I know about music than from
anyone else. She was also a public school teacher.
Mrs. Pate attended our monthly singings in Appleby
when she was able and found much pleasure (and
remembrance) in our exercises. She passed away Sunday
(May 4) at the age of 93, and will be buried today
(May 6) at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Nacogdoches.
Just a month before she passed away, she was blessed
to attend the "Farther Along" conference on Southern
Gospel music at the Middle Tennessee State University
in Murfreesboro, TN.
