Do any of you have information on the hymn writer and composer of REFLECTION, # 394 in the third edition of The Sacred Harp. I could not find the hymn elsewhere. The composer is given as "E. Elmore".

Thanks.

Robert:

You probably already found this, but just in case, E. Elmore is mentioned three times (p. 32, 42 & 46) in the source book Kiri Miller edited on the Chattahoochee convention. He appears to have been active in the early years of the convention, and the discussion on p. 46 suggests that he lived in Coweta County, GA. I see if that clue leads to any additional information. With regards to the words, I also came up empty.

Here's information on a Rev. Elijah Elmore living in Coweta County at the appropriate time:

No mention of Sacred Harp singing, and I don't know enough about the denominations of singers from this period to say if being a Lutheran minister makes him an unlikely candidate.

Another supportive clue is that Rev. E. Elmore was a Mason as indicated in this 1854 list of members for the Haralson Lodge in Coweta County:

This list also includes M. H. Turner, whom Warren in "The Makers..." identifies as a member of the Southern and Chattahoochee conventions and arranger of 339, When I Am Gone, which first appeared in the 1850 edition. Other Masons active in these conventions in the 1850s include Edmund Dumas, Lewis Ledbetter, Absalom Ogletree, H. S. Reese, J. P. Reese, J. A. T. Shell, J. R. Turner, M. M. Wynn, and, of course, B. F. White. So it seems possible to me that Elijah Elmore may have become familiar with SH through his Masonic connections and not his activity as an Evangelical Lutheran minister.

Thanks, Wade. I think this is likely the right person. I'm not aware of how much interaction there was between the Lutheran denomination and Sacred Harp in this period, but everything seems to fit. In hits that I got on Google, this person is often "Rev. E. Elmore", which is consistent with the attribution "E. Elmore" in the Sacred Harp.

I appreciate the help.

The Masonic connections of Rev. E. Elmore with Sacred Harp singers and composers certainly is a strong support for this being the correct individual.
