Greetings from Bob Fisch.  I am writing to introduce you to Poky Pedaling Stevens Point.  

 

Poky Pedaling Stevens Point has released its 2012 schedule of Bike Fun for the Stevens Point area.  Area residents and visitors will have the opportunity to share Bike Fun on these Poky Pedals.

 

As the Chief Bike Fun Officer for Poky Pedaling Stevens Point, I have created these opportunities for Bike Fun as a way for participants to enjoy a bicycle-oriented activity in an atypical but enjoyable way.  Standard bicycle organizations typically focus on the riding itself.  In contrast, Bike Fun with Poky Pedaling Stevens Point focuses on being part of some other fun activity, and a bicycle is simply the most practical mode of transportation to use while taking part.

 

The 2012 Bike Fun Calendar includes 9 Poky Pedals.  Each Poky Pedal has a theme, such as The Maple Ride in late September or the monthly Poky Pedaling Potluck Picnics.  The routes always stay on calm streets and multiuse paths.  Rides are slow and short.  For example, The Tiny Museum Ride will be approximately 8 miles long and will last about 3-4 hours.   A PDF of the 2012 Bike Fun Calendar is attached to this e-mail.

 

All Poky Pedaling Stevens Point events are free of charge and all Poky Pedalers are welcome.  Who is a Poky Pedaler?  A Poky Pedaler is someone who enjoys Bike Fun while riding safely and legally.  A Poky Pedaler places no value on pedaling fast or pedaling far, as these are not measures of how much Bike Fun was enjoyed and shared.  Anyone can be a Poky Pedaler if they choose to.  It is entirely up to you to decide whether or not you are a Poky Pedaler.

 

Poky Pedaling Stevens Point is not a club, since there is no membership.  It is not a business, since no fees are charged.  And it is not a charity, although we may find ways to have Bike Fun while helping our community.  Poky Pedaling Stevens Point might best be described as a community outlet for Bike Fun.

 

To learn more about Poky Pedaling Stevens Point, I invite you to visit the website at PokyPedalingStevensPoint.org.  On the website, you’ll find the full schedule of Bike Fun as well as further explanation of what Bike Fun is and what Poky Pedaling Stevens Point is all about.  As for individual Bike Fun events, more information will be posted a few weeks in advance of each.

 

The website also contains a blog where I’ll share lots of bikey stuff.  Much will be specific to Stevens Point, some will report on past Poky Pedals, some will share other Bike Fun I encounter on my own.

 

You’ll also discover there is a serious side to Bike Fun.  Bike Fun thrives when our streets become safer for Poky Pedalers, when our traffic infrastructure provides quality facilities for people who choose a bicycle for transportation, and when our community recognizes that bicycles are a normal way to get from A to B.

 

So I’ll also use the blog to share what other places around Wisconsin, around the US, and around the world are doing to improve their bicycle infrastructure.  You’ll read bicycle news and opinion with local, state, national, and international scope.  I’ll provide links to blog posts from others working to improve the traffic environment for people riding bicycles in their area.  All this will help illustrate what is possible for improving the Stevens Point area’s bicycle infrastructure and will encourage us to ask ourselves, “Why not here?”

 

The website also highlights Tweets from and a link to my @PokyPedalingSP Twitter feed.  These Tweets will share other bikey tidbits that I find fun or interesting but that I don’t feel like devoting a blog entry to.  I encourage you to follow my Twitter feed and engage in that form of conversation.
