The last few days i checked all possibilities of using open source
software to setup a server etc, i compared all the prices based on
collocation, preconfigured, dedicated, vps, etc etc.
My main motive for open source is of course that it's 'free', but if
you really check on what the extra time so costs are of setting it up
personally, maintaining it personally etc etc, then sometimes it can
be cheaper to go for a VPS or preconfigured server with windows and
Coldfusion installed.
For me it would be cheaper if i buy my own server and also host it
myself, then it's interesting, so for companies that can host their
own server and have a fast internet connection it's interesting but
when you don't have that possibility (almost fiber connection
available here but not yet) then the costs of setting up your own
server and install and maintain open source software on it can be even
more expensive.
Collocation seems attractive but if you add all the time and costs of
renting space, extra hardware firewall, sla (if none of basic then you
have to spend time yourself which might result in hours of down time)
updating the software, renting backup space etc etc. Then it's still a
expensive deal.
Also if you see there are still a lot of compatibility issues etc,
that is not a basis i want to setup clients on.
So how do you see this, very curious to everyone's opinion about this.
Thanks
