"Overwrite if Newer" compares the timestamp of the ebook file on disk
(epub in this case) to the last updated date on the web site.
In the calibre reader, one of the options is General->Misc->Remember the
current page when quitting. When that is turned on calibre saves your
current page inside the epub, updating the file's timestamp. (I have no
idea why calibre does that--it remembers your place in mobis without it.)
I don't remember the exact details off hand, but as I recall the
standard calibre column for date is automatically updated when you
perform certain actions and wasn't a good candidate for comparing.
So while it's not acting like you might want, it is operating as
designed. Sorry.
"Update EPUB if New Chapters" gets around this by comparing the number
of chapters instead.
