Visitors

The Centre <http://www2.lse.ac.uk/CPNSS/home.aspx> welcomes all its new visitors for this term: Eduardo Alonso, Seamus Bradley, Bruce Caldwell, Michael Dascal, Christian Hoffman, Soroush Rafiee-Rad, Christoph Schickhardt, Omri Tal, Christopher Thompson, Andrew Goldfinch and Dean Peters.

Erik Schokkaert (University of Leuven) will be a Visiting Professor in the Department <http://www2.lse.ac.uk/philosophy/home.aspx> and take up the position of Belgian Chair at the University of London in 2012-2013.



Events

The Forum for European Philosophy <http://www2.lse.ac.uk/europeanInstitute/research/forumForEuropeanPhilosophy/Home.aspx> will host a discussion on 'The Ethics of Human Enhancement' with Nick Bostrom (University of Oxford) and Anne Kerr (University of Leeds) on October 30, 6:30-8pm, Old Theatre, Old Building. On October 31, Philippe Mongin (CNRS, Paris) will give a Choice Group <http://www2.lse.ac.uk/CPNSS/projects/CoreResearchProjects/ChoiceGroup/choice_group_events.aspx> talk on 'The Utilitarian Relevance of the Aggregation Theorem', 5:30-7pm, LAK.2.06.

Robert Williams (University of Leeds) will give a Popper seminar <http://www2.lse.ac.uk/philosophy/NewsandEvents/seminars/popperseminars.aspx> on 'Probability and Non-Classical Logic' on November 6, 2-3:30pm, LAK.2.06.

Giovanni Valente (University of Pittsburgh) will give a Sigma Club <http://www2.lse.ac.uk/CPNSS/events/SigmaClub/Home.aspx> talk on 'Local Disentanglement in Relativistic Quantum Field Theory' on November 19, 5-7pm, LAK.2.06.

The Centre <http://www2.lse.ac.uk/CPNSS/home.aspx> will host a workshop on 'How the Markets Can Be Made to Support the Real Economy' on November 27, 5-8pm, LAK.2.06.

On December 10, the Centre <http://www2.lse.ac.uk/CPNSS/home.aspx> will host a book launch for Nancy Cartwright & Jeremy Hardie's 'Evidence-based Policy: A Practical Guide to Doing It Better'. Further details will be announced on the Centre's website.



News

Richard Bradley, Roman Frigg, Katie Steele, Alex Voorhoeve and Charlotte Werndl have been awarded a �725,000 research grant by the AHRC for a project on 'Managing Severe Uncertainty'. The project will be pursued over three years, starting in March 2013. Two PhD students and one Postdoctoral Research Officer will be recruited for the project. Michael Otsuka will be moving from UCL to LSE to take up a Professorship in the Department from September 2013.

Gabriel Wollner will be moving to from the University of Bayreuth to take up a Lecturer position in the Department. He will be starting a new course on Business and Organisational Ethics.

The Andrea Mannu Prize UG for 2011/2012 was awarded to James Matharu for best performance by an undergraduate in any degree administered by the Department.

Friends returning to the Lakatos building will notice the new entrance space (pictured above) which marks the start of plans to rejuvenate the building in line with the exciting activities and events taking place inside. Visitors are now introduced to the history of the Department via a modern graphic wall and plans are in action to further display the seminal works of past and current members of the Department and the Centre.
