Morning everyone! I thought I would give any and all Joan Osborne fans a
quick warning about her new album "Righteous Love". I got an advance copy
through a friend because he knows "Relish" has always been a staple in my CD
changer. Interscope picked Osborne up after Polygram dropped her when they
said "Righteous" wasn't up to par...and they were right. This collection of
songs sounds as if it was recorded in someone's basement 10 mintues after
Joan woke up following a late night out with the girls. Her voice lacks the
fire and grit of "Relish" which is even more prominent in her second release
"Early Recordings". The last song is worth a listen because it has soul,
but I have to say I am extremely disappointed with the (I can't believe I'm
saying this) under produced yard sale quality of such a creative
personality. I'll still squeeze up to the front row when she comes to First
Ave in Minneapolis on September 22nd, but I'm really glad I didn't have to
cough up the $13 to pay for "Righteous Love". I plan on giving the CD
another turn or two and then I'll wait for her to redeem the songs during a
live performance.

Well, I must reply...because I got an advance copy, too. And I
DISAGREE 100% with Anne. I do admit Righteous Love is quite different
from Relish. Righteous Love has some fabulous grooves to it - it's got
a heavy R&B feel to it. I don't think people should get discouraged
because it's different. I'm thinking this isn't the album Joan
originally produced because there are a whole bunch of great songs Joan
performed the last few years that aren't included on this album. I'm
not saying these songs aren't great - they're just new. I'm in la-la
land listening to Joan's one-of-a-kind raspy voice. I especially love
her Dylan cover, "Safety In Numbers", and "Hurricane."
