Unable to handle kernel paging request after poking ieee80211_default_rc_algo

With a slightly modified 2.6.28-rc9 (with fastboot patches) I get the
following oops after doing the following:
echo pid > /sys/module/mac80211/parameters/ieee80211_default_rc_algo
cat /sys/module/mac80211/parameters/ieee80211_default_rc_algo
(sometimes I need to repeat the cat command several times). Prior to
changing it to pid ieee80211_default_rc_algo value is minstrel.
