The Other as Self-Portrait
MOVIE 2004

http://aroseisaroseisarose.com/mp.mov

All of these pictures of "Mark Palmer" were collected from a basic image
search and download (01/07/04), then assembled for display as my
self-portrait. I am pleased to say that there are a fair number of musicians
and photographers out there in Mark Palmerland, as well as some oddities!

On a scale from trivial to sublime, I'd have to give this one a fairly
trivial rating. Even so, I find it kind of amusing, and hopefully so will
you.

MARK:

Great to finally put a face with the name. Its a little jumpy to
connect to, was thinking it might be more effective if every face is
cropped so the frame stays the same size. I only say this because I
was thinking of doing a piece for moveon.orgs 30 sec ad contest by
downloading 900 pictures of bush & making a piece that way, but just
the thought of processing 900 bush pictures made me retch.

Yeah, I decided to keep the image sizes different bearing in mind that this
work is ideally meant to be DV projected full screen the way a movie is.
What you see from the website, unfortunately, is but a tiny, jpeg-jaggied
blip compared to the real thing, but such is the current state of the net
nowadays.

Also, the idea of adding my own transformations seemed like a slippery slope
that could lead to an excess of aestheticization. Thus I think it best to
keep it the way it is, warts and all.

M

PS if you use After Effects, you don't need to process the images. (Assuming
you don't want to change the size etc.) Just import them as a group and
you're off and running.

Sorry for the unconscious plagiarism on my part, TM! I will think of a new
title if my movie ever makes a proper public appearance anyplace.

You've got an interesting and amusing work there too by the way.

No worries... I just thought it was interesting that the two
works, very different from one another, had similar titles.

Considering the common use of "self portrait" in art, and "other" in current
discourse, and the relationship between self and the other - it seems likely
that two or more would come up with the same-ish title :-)

Maybe other works with the same title could give deference to the first
work; it could almost be a category or genre of selfportraiture (?) I'm just
typing my thoughts here - I think I'll go make more coffee.

Good pt! I'll use it.

So who can come up with a list of all works with "portrait" in the title?

portrait of the artist as a young man / dog / virus

(this last one mine)

etc.

The Portrait of a Lady
Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror
Portrait of Dorian Gray
"Tall Portrait (2 or 3 storeys) of M.P. as D.B." is a title not many
will have the need to duplicate {David Bromige, "Desire" p.134)
Portraits and Prayers (Gertrude Stein, 1934) which includes Portraits of
Painters and Portrait fo Mabel Dodge at the Villa Curonia
Portrait of the Artist as a Bachelor (Kendrick Smithyman. In "Dwarf with
a Billiard Cue" pp47-8)
Portraits in Miniature (Lytton Strachey)

There is a way: JASC Animation Shop embedded in Paint Shop Pro 7 and 8, has a tool to put this number or even more images together and generates a mpeg (no sound, unfortunately).
